Athena and the owl-eyes of Glaucous

Today we stopped by the Parthenon in Nashville where they have built a historic rendering of our best guess of how the place looked in ancient times. I learned something new from Richard Smoley that I haven’t read anywhere before. He told me “glaucous” in Ancient Greek was also used to describe owls and the expression Athena’s eyes were glaucous, which the books tell you probably meant gray or blue, probably could have meant “owl-like” as well. What strikes me about this is how stark and gaudy Athena’s eyes and face are and yet we see this expression on many works from antiquity and could be another clue on how consciousness saw powerful figures much like what we saw with melamu in ancient Sumer.
